BEARING FRUITFUL IN OLD AGE

Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; Psalms 92:13-14

Many women have the desire to remain as young as possible. Many efforts have been made in the cosmetics and fashion industry to invest in youthful looks for ageing women. But the honest truth is that ageing is a natural path of healthy living, and aged women are a great blessing to our churches and our generations. These women are usually full of years of experiences both good and bad, and if God can help their lives, they can become tools that bring forth in their old age.

The scripture above in Psalms 92:14 speaks of a set of people, who are they? In order to answer this question, let us consider the four key words in the verse above, which are:

1. Planted
2. Flourish
3. Bring forth
4. Old age
So, the set of people referred to here are those that are planted in the house of the Lord, those who have spent their lives seeking Him who is their Maker. Such women are not tossed about by different winds of doctrine, they remain standing and faithful in Christ despite what life throws at them. They know what it means to walk with God through thick and thin, they have seen all sorts of church life and church experiences, they are the mothers of the church, women who can hold the hands of God for their local churches.  Such was the woman Anna the daughter of Phanuel. How our generation needs women like her in the church of today.

One key character of these set of women is that they flourish, that is they thrive, they grow healthily, they prosper in their walk with God because they have been planted in God’s house.  This is not just that they attend church services regularly, but that they dwell in God’s presence even in their homes.  As a result of their interaction with the Lord, they flourish.

Not only do these set of people flourish but they bring forth at old age, at the time when you have thought that they should not be bearing fruit, their lives continue to bring forth, why, it is because they continue to dwell in the presence of God at old age.

Old age is the later part of normal life, a time when they have advanced in years, a time when their body ages. And at such a time when they may not be producing biologically again, or be physically strong, such aged women bear fruit unto the Lord. Their old age becomes a treasure to the church, their years of experience form a resource to shape the lives of those in the church.

This is the gift and the resource that the church of today needs and particularly the women folk.

In this series of blogs, we will see what contribution these set of people can bring to the church in their old age.

If you are one of the aged, or you have an aged woman in your life, it is my prayer that she will contribute to the success of God’s house. Amen.
